22 million missing Bush e-mails found

WASHINGTON (AP) — Computer technicians have found 22 million missing White House e-mails from the administration of President George W. Bush and the Obama administration is searching for dozens more days' worth of potentially lost e-mail from the Bush years, according to two groups that filed suit over the failure by the Bush White House to install an electronic record keeping system.

The two private groups — Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the National Security Archive — said Monday they were settling the lawsuits they filed against the Executive Office of the President in 2007.

It will be years before the public sees any of the recovered e-mails because they will now go through the National Archives' process for releasing presidential and agency records. Presidential records of the Bush administration won't be available until 2014 at the earliest.

The tally of missing e-mails, the additional searches and the settlement are the latest development in a political controversy that stemmed from the Bush White House's failure to install a properly working electronic record keeping system. Two federal laws require the White House to preserve its records.

The two private organizations say there is not yet a final count on the extent of missing White House e-mail and there may never be a complete tally.

Meredith Fuchs, general counsel to the National Security Archive, said "many poor choices were made during the Bush administration and there was little concern about the availability of e-mail records despite the fact that they were contending with regular subpoenas for records and had a legal obligation to preserve their records."

"We may never discover the full story of what happened here," said Melanie Sloan, CREW's executive director. "It seems like they just didn't want the e-mails preserved."

Sloan said the latest count of misplaced e-mails "gives us confirmation that the Bush administration lied when they said no e-mails were missing."

The two groups say the 22 million White House e-mails were previously mislabeled and effectively lost.

The government now can find and search 22 million more e-mails than it could in late 2005 and the settlement means that the Obama administration will restore 94 calendar days of e-mail from backup tape, said Kristen Lejnieks, an attorney representing the National Security Archive.

Sheila Shadmand, another lawyer representing the National Security Archive, said the Obama administration is making a strong effort to clean up "the electronic data mess left behind by the prior administration."

Records released as a result of the lawsuits reveal that the Bush White House was aware during the president's first term in office that the e-mail system had serious archiving problems, which didn't become publicly known until 2006, when federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald disclosed them during his criminal investigation of the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame.

A Microsoft Corp. document on the Bush White House's e-mail problems states that Microsoft was called in to help find electronic messages in October 2003, more than two years before the problem surfaced publicly. October 2003 was the month that the Justice Department began gearing up its criminal investigation into who in the Bush administration leaked the identity of Plame, the wife of Bush administration war critic Joseph Wilson.

I guess they weren't that lost.
The good thing about lost e-mails is that they can actually find their way back home, unlike Snow White. Hell, the seven dwarfs couldn't even help her find her way back home.
Oh, wait a minute...... they didn't want her to find her way back home. Those dirty perverts.

Sometimes it's better to refrain from using the keyboard and let people think you are a complete idiot than to actually type something and prove it. Man are you clueless!

You mean besides cleaning up the mess you lousy right wing fools made and are now trying to blame on everyone else?

I see we have yet another right wing comedic voice spewing forth from the peanut gallery. Yeah and if Obama "lost" 22 million e-mails you would be the first one on this board calling him a fascist communist and claiming he was circumventing the law. You sound like one of those morons from Columbiana County. Am I close?

Not by a longshot! The problem is that Obama is doing nothing to lead. He has to go back thru everything Bush did to find something to distract the media (useful idiots) away from his failing agenda. For someone that said we need to "take the mirrors off of the bus", he cannot seem to quit looking that way. To lead is to move forward, but Obama cannot quit looking back.

You do understand that by federal law the whitehouse has to preserve its records don't you? And do you further understand that a lawsuit was filed against the executive branch by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the National Security Archive and that release of these e-mails is a result of that lawsuit? Are you advocating that Obama break the law and that his office not pursue the release of these e-mails?

Exactly what media is he distracting? Your blind resentment of Obama is quite obvious and has really clouded your judgment.

And what is the purpose of releasing these missing emails? Who will use them and for what purpose? It's called a witch hunt. Try using your brain for once.

What part of, "why are they so concerned" confusing you? I'm sure they just want to make sure that Bush has a good public record for his presidential library. :lmao2:

Let me ask this...If there was nothing to hide in those emails why "lose" them in the first place and show the disregard for trying to recover them that Cheney/Bush showed? why not keep them for proper preservation in the national archives like they were supposed to?

It appears that they demand only Obama be held to standards of ethics and responsibility. Isn't it funny that not one of these idiots is happy for the release of these e-mails so that they will show that Bush and company had nothing to do with outing a CIA agent? They appear to be totally afraid that the idol they have built for Dubya may be toppled.

I've heard this come from many people on the right as the NSA wiretapping controversy was exposed:

"If they have nothing to hide, then they don't have anything to worry about"

So don't worry about it guys. Right?

I am indifferent too it. It doesn't matter one way or the other too me. If there is something in there that will help the current administration do their job more effectively, then by all means it is a great thing. But I still contend, it is simply a witch hunt to try to find something else to blame Bush for.

I think the media should start to publish each and every one of them on a daily basis. Say 50 -100 or more a day. Let the American citizens read them too, let us all see what was going on.

If Bush was a bad boy, I want to know it. If it exposes others from the Democratic Party or even the Republican Party as potential traitors I want to know that to.

It would be interesting to see what certain decision were made and what obstacles they had to work around and even better, why.

What the hell we might even be able to give our enemies some more good information they can use against us or even reveal some intelligence operations and individual participants. Wouldn't that be great?

Come to think of it why not have Obama and his administration start publishing all their emails on a monthly basis so we don't have to hunt them down later and then we truly would have transparency in government.
