Firefighter Told Not To Park In Firehouse Because Of Political Views
POSTED: 2:50 pm EST November 12, 2009
UPDATED: 7:24 pm EST November 12, 2009
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Firefighter Mike Di’Giacomo said his SUV (http://www.wfsb.com/news/21597350/detail.html#) is banned from in the firehouse because the bumper stickers he has on it, displays his political views.
Di’Giacomo said he has never run into a problem like this in the 10 years he has been with the department.
The bumper stickers read:
Somewhere in Kenya, a village is missing its idiot
I’ll keep my guns, freedom and money. You keep the change
Obama Bin Lyin. Impeach Now
Di’Giacomo said that because of them, he’s not being treated the same as everyone else in his firehouse. He said, “These are just my political views. It’s freedom of speech as far as I’m concerned. It’s my personal vehicle.”
Di’Giacomo said on Tuesday night, a supervisor told him because of his stickers, he could not park his SUV inside the firehouse anymore.
Parking (http://www.wfsb.com/news/21597350/detail.html#) is allowed inside the firehouse on a first-come, first-served basis.
“He (Di’Giacomo’s supervisor) said that the union, corporation counsel, and downtown were all in agreement that I could not park inside of the firehouse anymore. However, I spoke to the union president this morning and said he was not aware of any such agreement and that I was welcome to come down and file a grievance, which I will do,” Di’Giacomo said.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News asked the fire departmenthttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://www.wfsb.com/news/21597350/detail.html#) about the incident and was told to submit questions to Chief Charles Teale(who is african-american) in writing.
Di’Giacomo said no matter what Teale’s explanation is, he will not remove the stickers.

I didn't know that Hartford fire fighters had numerous anti-Bush stickers on their vehicles. Can you support this?
Why did you find it necessary to mention a man's race in your post?

No I was making a generalization , my point is that if they banned employees with anti Bush stickers from parking their cars in company lots, there would be a lot of empty spaces.

Take some photos of other fire fighters pro-Obama stickers, if there are any, and then sue the crap out of the city.

I wouldn't allow a racist sticker -Somewhere in Kenya, a village is missing its idiot -on one of my employees cars either.
He was not born in Kenya. The only common denominator between Obama and Kenya, is that Obama is black and Kenya is a mostly black country.
The only reason to include "Kenya" in the "sticker" is a sloppy, racist attempt to call attention to Obama's skin colour.
Nothing more.
I'm frankly surprised the man still has a job.

Fire this man.
He couldn't possibly be a good firefighter if he is against Obama.
It is perfectly legal to have a racist bumper sticker on a car without losing your job. Frankly I don't give a shit what the man has on his car, only if he can fight fires.
Leave all the political bullshit at the door.
Obama will be gone in early 2012 anyway.
He will be campaigning so hard he won't be running the country anyway.

There's a big difference between expressing one's political views and something which is downright hateful and possibly offensive to his co-workers..
I wonder if they are also firing people who still have McCain Palin stickers on their car. Doubt it.
This guy put that sticker on his car because he's a prick and has no respect for anyone he works with. And he's just playing the victim card.

Political Hate is a subjective term and the law doesn't deal with subjective terms.
If this guy can't have a bumper sticker on his car, no matter what it says, then nobody can.
If a co-worker doesn't like the bumper sticker it is his problem. He does not have the right to tell anyone what they can have on their car. The fact the the parking is on public property is not relevant. This man is the public as well. He has just as much right to use it as anyone.
Would you say the same if the mans co-workers complained about the color of his car? It is the same issue.
This president will go down in history as the most devisive ever.

And it's perfectly legal for the employer to fire the worker with the racist sticker on his car if the employer feels the employees racist sticker is a cancer in the lockeroom, so to speak.
Maybe you're ok with anything being on the man's car, but most people are not.

Actually the employer WOULD have legal basis to fire if he feels the persons stickers are a detriment to the moral of the staff, if enough people complain and he feels it is hurting or hindering his staff he can fire him...the others on the crew have a right to work in a non abrasive, comfortable enviroment. Sorry but if i wore a shirt into my workplace that had racist or sexist offensive material on it that made others feel uncomfortable and my boss told me to go home and change and i refused he could legally fire me for insabortination.

Most company policies strictly prohibit actions, statements that can be racist, sexist, or based on someone's sexual orientation.
And by the way, the "fun" is already over.
This issue has already been to court - all levels of it.

The employeer has the right to ask him to remove the stickers but the employee is under no obligation to do it.
You are assuming that his co-workers are hyper partisan and that is the most important thing in their lives.
I doubt that is true.
They are firefighters and as such should be men of integrity.
The only thing that is important is their ability to fight fires and not let their co-workers die.
I can't beleive this is even an issue with the employees. The story says nothing about his co-workers saying anything, just the supervisor.
Again his bumper stickers are opinion and who is to say his co-workers don't agree with him.

I didn't say anything about freedom of speech. You cannot deny this man his livlihood because of the opinion of one man.
The article says nothing about his co-workers or creating an adversarial workplace.
So would it be OK to fire this man because only the supervisor disagrees with him but his co-workers agree with him?
Whi decides what bumper stickers a person can have.
By the way, the story was only about his parking of his car and not about the workplace at all.

They're only telling him that he can't park it at the publicly owned lot.

Moby, I was responding to The Limit that said he is surprised the man still had his job.
I was being sarcastic of course.
The article was about parking his car and said nothing about his workplace so it was a stretch on his part, but that is the way it goes here.
We still don't know if his co-workers agree with him or even have a problem with his views.
Anyway, he can use his wifes car, or one of his other cars, to go to work and solve the problem.

I am SURE there is more to this story than we are being told.
For this guy to have that particular bumper sticker suggests to me that it's likely he was very vocal about his feelings.
So I'm wondering was this bumper sticker just an excuse he came up with? Had other employees complained about him before this? Did he have a history started politcal arguments with them before and this whole thing is just him trying to be the poor victim?
I've learned to keep my political feelings to myself while I'm on the job. ESPECIALLY if those feelings happen to differ with the man who is signing my paycheck.
We all have the right to free speech. But people also have the right to ask us to leave private property if they dislike our behavior.

Many forget the simple fact that when you go to work for law enforcement you are not entitled to protection under labor laws and all that other stuff the average employee enjoys. Law enforcement is para military, and that changes everything.
Fire fighters are usually city or county employees, so I am unsure of their status. (I've never found a jurisdiction where police and fire got along that well, so I haven't spent as much time with them as I have officers and deputies.)
I've seen co-workers written up for tee shirts and bumper stickers.

Myth: Affirmative action is an African American entitlement program
FACT: Affirmative action benefits a broad range of people and communities that continue to face discrimination in this country, including Latino, Native, Arab, Asian and African Americans. The primary beneficiaries, however, have been white women.
Contrary to popular belief, African Americans are not the sole, or even the primary, beneficiaries of affirmative action. Rather, a wide range of groups have benefited from these polocies which promote equality by directing resources, outreach and other opportunities to targeted underrepresented communities.
These groups include women, Native Americans, Arab Americans, Latino/as, Asian Americans, and African Americans. Of these groups, the United States Department of Labor found that white women are the primary beneficiaries of affirmative action.
