First "conservationist" maybe a better term.
I don't think the concept of enviormentalism was called that, or if ppl even though about pollution as a threat.

I think up until relatively recently the world was seen as a vast, almost endless place that was far beyond our ability to alter in any significant manner...
The forest & oceans like space was bountiful & ripe for the pickings & would continue unchanged/unaffected forever........
Anyone sitting down & actually observing would see otherwise...
That idyllic crap was convenient for those men out to exploit ever inch they thought would enrich them..
The EPA was started in 1970 but that doesn't mean that no political leaders were environmentalists before that date. it's the typical issue of finding one point of data and then ignoring all others.

Conservative political leaders generally don't give a hoot about the environment until of course they want to go hunting in wooded areas not stripped by loggers (Cheney), or go fishing in clean waters (Bushes), or make sure their starter castles are located nowhere near coal-fired factories or sludge runoffs.
Actually, Laura Bush retrofitted the Crawford Ranch into an environmentalist's dream home.

Environmental Hero: Theodore Roosevelt
"The conservation of our natural resources and their proper use constitute the fundamental problem which underlies almost every other problem of our national life," he told Congress in 1907. This sentiment underscored the message of Roosevelt's conservation record in office.
In 1902 he established the first national park at Crater Lake, Oregon and went on to create four more (Wind Cave National Park, SD; Sully's Hill, ND; Platt National Park, OK; and Mesa Verde National Park, CO). During his tenure as president from 1901 to 1909 he created 51 wildlife refugees, passed the Antiquities Act (which led to the creation of 18 national monuments), and created the National Park Service.
Really.
Who in particular.
Thanks.
Bush was pushing for more strip mining. That's not environmentally sound.
Look it up.

"trees cause more pollution than automobiles do"
"you've seen one tree you've seen them all"
The above phrases were uttered by possibly the worst environmental president in our lifetime, Ronald Reagan. Anyone here remember James Watt and Ann Gorsuch?
I am not quite sure what Senior Numbnuts was trying to convey with his opening post, but I hope that he is in someway saying he is concerned for the environment. If that is the case, then I expect he will find a new level of respect for Jimmy Carter.

Not everybody treats a message board as IMs. I logged off yesterday evening, since I do have a life.
To answer your question, it's easier to list those who actually DID support an environmental protection initiative, and it's short:
Eisenhower first introduced land and water conservation, but funding has been abysmal since 1996.
Nixon championed clean air, but a strengthened bill was finally introduced and passed by George H.W. Bush.
George W. Bush passed the oceans antiquities bill, preserving such things as coral reefs.
Republicans consistently treat any environmental matter as a joke. Ayuk Ayuk, them treehuggers...HAR HAR HAR. They ALWAYS are on the side of the corporate interest of any such legislation.
