View Full Version : What should we do in Afghanistan
The Afghan war was necessary to combat the terrorist training camps but what now? The war has been going on for almost 8 years, the drug trade has flourished provide the terrorist with vast amounts of money and we pumped $Billion of US Dollars into Pakistan where many terrorists have found safe haven.
Russia could not conquer this region and after 8 years of trying the USA can't bring peace and clear the terrorists.
Is it time for more troops?
Is it time to get out?
Is it time for something else?

Complex question.
First, this is GW's fuckup on a couple different levels. Afghanistan was neglected because GW wanted to go running off to Iraq in search of fabled WMD's.
Cut and run.
Afghanistan should have been maintained as a primary focus, but considering that the dems are in the Whitehouse and our global rep is trashed (thanks to GW), there is no way to continue this operation effectively.
The O'bama doesn't have capabilities of continuing a war against terror. Not a fucking chance in hell he could get anything done over there.
So close up shop, bring our boys home and let the Taliban overrun the place once again.

Damn if I know. seriously.
More troops might help, the generals think so...but then again they always do.
More troops -or " going heavy" sorta reminds me of Vietnam, more and more draftees, carpet bombing, all futile.
The qustion is: is this a cival war now where the Taliban and the 'democratic gov't' are vying for power?
If so - then getting involved in a cival war is unwinnable
( again the Nam parallel)
Some want a stand off approach - drones, etc. -but that problem is civilian casualties.
The only thing I can think of is to aid Pakistan to keep the Taliban out of Waziristan ( that mountainous region between the countries)
With the history of Afg. being more of a cival war now, i hate to say it but getting out, and supporting Pakistan is prolly the only viable option.
"I can't handle that puzzle" is the best answer i can give you

Will Dick Cheney go?
He was deferred. Like Bill Clinton was.
Except in Cheney's case, he actually had a government job at the time, on Nixon's staff.
Clinton, conversely, spent the Vietnam war hiding out in Oxford in a "student status," dodging the draft entirely, experimenting with non-inhaling marijuana and cocaine non-snorting.

I think we need a presence that is able to kill surgically and quickly. Obama is not going to leave the country wide open (despite what many on the far left want). I do not think we need to attempt to build another country from scratch (and Iraq is far from done and will likely be less safe in 20 years). Keeping terrorists from organizing in large groups (like they did here pre 2001) needs to be a priority. Outside of that, this has always been a decentralized global challenge.
Putting aside the stupid hyperbole by some on this board (Obama's killing people, blah, blah, blah), I'm glad some intellectual thought is being applied. We simply don't have the resources to build 200 plus democracies via the Military.

Was he deferred 5 times loser? Did he start a wasteful war causing the death of hundreds of thousands of people?
By the way, Cheney dodged the draft % TIMES.

It's a deferral - legal and official.
Draft dodging, as in the case of Bill Clinton, is not legal and official.

Old Dick and his 5 freaking deferments. Dick did everything humanly possible -- short of fleeing to Canada -- to avoid military conscription: He applied for and recieved 5 student deferments, a number described as "incredible" by professor David Curry of the University of Missouri in St. Louis. Curry has written extensively about the draft, including a 1985 book, "Sunshine Patriots: Punishment and the Vietnam Offender." The Times quotes Mr. Curry as observing: "That's a lot of times for the draft board to say O.K."
* Three weeks and a day after the Gulf of Tonkin resolution passed (giving President Johnson unlimited military force in Vietnam), Cheney married Lynn Cheney.
* Within a day or so of the end of deferment for "Married w/o children," Mr. and Mrs. Cheney conceived their first child.
Here's the rest of Cheney's well timed actions:
In February 1962, when Mr. Cheney was classified as 1-A available for service he was doing poorly at Yale. But the military was taking only older men at that point, and like others who were in college at the time, Mr. Cheney seemed to have little concern about being drafted.
In June, he left Yale. After returning home to Casper, a small city in east-central Wyoming, he worked as a lineman for a power company.
At that point, the Vietnam War was still just a glimmer on the horizon. In 1962, only 82,060 men were inducted into the service, the fewest since 1949. Mr. Cheney was eligible for the draft but, as he said during his confirmation hearings in 1989, he was not called up because the Selective Service System was taking only older men.
But by 1963, ferment in Vietnam was rising. Mr. Cheney enrolled in Casper Community College in January 1963 he turned 22 that month and sought his first student deferment on March 20, according to records from the Selective Service System. After transferring to the University of Wyoming at Laramie, he sought his second student deferment on July 23, 1963.
On Aug. 7, 1964, Congress approved the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, which allowed President Lyndon B. Johnson to use unlimited military force in Vietnam. The war escalated rapidly from there.
Just 22 days later, Mr. Cheney married his high school sweetheart, Lynne. He sought his third student deferment on Oct. 14, 1964.
In May 1965, Mr. Cheney graduated from college and his draft status changed to 1-A. But he was married, which offered him some protection.
In July, President Johnson announced that he was doubling the number of men drafted. The number of inductions soared, to 382,010 in 1966 from 230,991 in 1965 and 112,386 in 1964.
Mr. Cheney obtained his fourth deferment when he started graduate school at the University of Wyoming on Nov. 1, 1965.
On Oct. 6, 1965, the Selective Service lifted its ban against drafting married men who had no children. Nine months and two days later, Mr. Cheney's first daughter, Elizabeth, was born. On Jan. 19, 1966, when his wife was about 10 weeks pregnant, Mr. Cheney applied for 3-A status, the "hardship" exemption, which excluded men with children or dependent parents. It was granted.
In January 1967, Mr. Cheney turned 26 and was no longer eligible for the draft.

This is just the thing. While Bush was completely out to eat on the issue, I think Obama understands that this is the one place where al Queda actually had a strong hold...setting up training bases and benefitting from solid Taliban support. In a decentralized world, I'm good for fighting surgically using our technology and global reach to our advantage. However, if there is ONE place to keep an eye on (with troops), I would think this is the place. Again, this doesn't mean we send tens of thousands of troops in, but it does mean we need a presence that can kill, monitor and disrupt.

Afghanistan is the perfect country to have terrorist training camps. That's why there were so many of them and our goal was to not only remove the camps but also make it so other camps can't just pop up to replace them next week.
Leaving means that nothing has changed except that now Al-Qaeda has more money than they did in 2001 and also has more strength in Pakistan.

This is such a no win situation.
We don't have the ruthlessness necessary to get these guys attention.
We could level all known terror camps and proxy support our favorite bad guys hoping they rise to the top .
But any real stabilizing would require decades and trillions we need at home.
We have no stomach for a long protracted action and our history is very consistent on this.

First of all, the president does not control every aspect of the Military. There are others for that. Some things do not require presidential approval as they are administrative and not controlled by congressional oversight.
There are going to be changes with the war pretty soon whether Obama wants it or not. But he does want it. He needs it...we all do.
Afghanistan is not Iraq and is not Kuwait....it is also not Vietnam. The Department of Defense is looking at all of this and making hard choices, but a demand for more troops right now and sending them is a political trap for Obama set by whoever leaked this information about the troop increase request.
Expect a couple of things, a re-evaluation of current troop rotations, a larger effort towards recruitment (more money) and the Democratic Party will probably buy commercial time to sell whatever they do decide to the American People. (none of which takes in special thought to realise)

In this case the cure (according to the American cowboy logic) is violence.. Not a surprise though as that is the solution to most of our problems..
I mentioned all those cause they came & didn't stay... They got beaten out... The usa nor anyone is gonna beat them down.... We could not even beat Vietnam... Sooner or later we will join the club...
It is more reasonable to help them... Get some of the good/better taliban & work w/ them.......

These guys hate our fucking guts. They hate everything we stand for. The only thing that will appease them is when we all wear turbans and pray toward the east to Allah on a fucking blanket 4 times a day.
There is no negotiating with this. It fucking baffles me that people are so fucking gullible as to not understand this.
And you're right, I don't disagree that this will be a losing battle. GW fucked up when he went cherry-picking mythical WMD's in Iraq and ran out on Afghanistan and the O'bama... well, he has other ideas.
It's 5 times a day, but.....anyway.
What do you want to happen? Do you want more troops?

I see BC backed out of this one.
But he's partially right, I'll give him credit. It's an unwinable situation at the moment.
Unless we're willing to deploy the necessary resources and garner enough allies to wage this war along side of us and this war becomes a priority to the president and congress, then it's a big circle jerk.
It's not a priority to the O'bama, GW fucked up our global rep and everyone bailed out and the allocation of resources is much ado about nothing - a political pissing match.
There's no focus, no strategy, no goals.
Bring them home now.

Did you read my post? Are you aware that the O'bama already tried to kiss the Taliban's ass and they told him to fuck off? You think I made it up? Go google it.
By they I mean radical Islam. Not Afghanistan citizens, who by the way are just a step below hating our fucking guts, our culture and democracy.
The Taliban and the other anti-western factions over there have one objective in life - to take down western civilization. If and when we leave, the Taliban (who already are doing this) will step back in, implement their 'beat and rape anyone who smiles in public' policy, bring more assholes in with them and design, plot and attempt to execute more damage to anything and everything western.
But you think that we can simply go to them and say 'hey, let's forget about the whole thing'.
What don't you understand? I really don't get it. Their interest is in the downfall of western culture.
There is no negotiating.

Being willing is not enough. Resources are tough to bring into the region and is part of the advantage the "Enemy" has there. It is a "Come after us" ploy to get troops drawn into an area where they can easily be defeated or beaten down.
Yes, I think your right that Obama has not made this a priority, but I ask....what is the priority exactly. The priority is the defense of the nation. What has been the goal in this war on terror up until now? To capture or kill Osama Bin Laden. Staying within the goals has been a huge problem no matter who takes blame for it.
The most important part of fighting in Afghanistan is intelligent and strategic planning. This is a very different kind of war than even the guerilla warfare that threw the US off during the Vietnam war and took us time to adjust to. The same is true here. The mountainous terrain is difficult in that it is vast. You can't just claim area that cannot be defended so we won't be seeing a lot of base building in Afghanistan.

I don't agree that violence will always work........ It will never work there... You can not fight the ideas & hate w/ bombs..... These ppl are just never going to stop........ Call Westmoreland for more troops- you see how well that worked in Vietnam...... :banghead:
We are not going to agree. I don't care if anyone here agrees....... COuld care less......

It has been 8 years now........ &????
They can be there a hundred & it will be the same....
They need to cut a deal......... Get some of the not so bad taliband to buddy up & they can do the grunt work.... If the bad ppl take over something seems like a nice big conventional target.. Not running around in the mountains & bombing anything that moves...
The solution is not a military one....
8 years , but not at the current force strength, or the new force strength coming up
( You know it has to increase, or we leave - there are not enough US troops there now to carry out the new mission of building the Afgan Army,
as well as killing Taliban ).
This is the same deal as Nam, a cival war, but it has the added twist of nationbuilding , like Iraq.:help:
A very difficult political challenge ( corrupt Karzi gov't ), as well as strategic
( the isolation, and local war lord controls),
as well as tacticle ( the difficult terrain, and identifying the enemy) considerations
Every bone in my body screams "Get out of this quicksand".
Yet my head also knows that doing so will revert to approx. the situation pre- 9-11.
I guess get out , then be willing to go back with drones.
But Bill Clinton tried that approach also.
Al_Queda has been greatly weakend since then; but they are a multi headed hydra now, less centralized but more worldwide.
It's a puzzle within a puzzle.
I'll usually venture an opinion, but i'm stumped on this one.:disbelief:

Yes w/ all those wackO's running around that is a possibility...... But it is a big planet & we cannot police/invade all of it....
I think that there are segments in place now that are much more moderate then some of the wackY murders.... IMO they can be much more effective than we can....
I think we need to work on over coming the hate by rebuilding ( mini-Marshall plan) the place... All the money we are spending on bombing the fourth world country could go a long long way rebuilding it & putting ppl to work...........

I have felt all along that we should do the same thing in Afghanistan that we did in Kosovo. . . stay with the air attack and avoid boots on the ground. We are no match for people that know every cave and cranny of that Godforsaken landscape. Bomb the hell out of their cities taking out utilities and all that is needed for a more modern way of life. Bomb the poppy fields and then leave them to their misery. Let them know as long as they harbor terrorist training camps and bow to Taliban rule, we will continue to come back to disrupt those plotting to kill us and let them make the decision when they want to get rid of the Taliban and Al Queda. It didn't take the people in Kosovo long to decide to turn Milosevic over to the world court and that was done without the loss of even one American life in combat.

I guess that is why you are just sorta liberal............
Bombing innocent women & children & destroying an ancient civilization is fine if it suites your political agenda...
Your foolish ideas of the cowboy riding in & kicking ass as just that....
Afghani-NAM is not Kosovo..........
Bombing & murdering ppl to try & force them to rise up against their masters fails.......... You only serve to turn them against.... You ppl learned nothing in Vietnam...
