When the watermelon patch pic was posted, it was right around the time that Ms. Obama had planted her victory garden on the WH grounds. I didn't think much of it then, but as T-Cat reminded me of those old cartoons of blacks eating watermelon in unflattering caricatures of their race, I can see where the pic might have been delivered in an insulting fashion.

I grew up in the midwest in a small farming community - we had no blacks around, and so racism was a foreign concept to me. I've never used derogatory words to describe other races; I was taught early on that is unacceptable behavior. So, maybe most of my life I've been insulated from racial strife, although I do know what it is. I've just never witnessed any of it personally. Perhaps that is why I don't automatically think something is racist, such as the watermelon patch picture.

However, I will state emphatically that when racist words or images are used to make a group or an individual feel less valued or of less worth than others, it is wrong. There is no denying it.

The flag-draped coffin of a 28-year old soldier killed in Iraq was among the first photographed by media late Tuesday, after Defense Secretary Robert Gates lifted a longstanding ban on press coverage of the return of fallen soldiers.

The deceased soldier, Army Specialist Israel Candelaria Mejias, a native of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, died in Baghdad on April 5.

Gates in February reversed a controversial policy dating back to 1991 barring photos of the coffins of service members who perished in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
