Obama 'green jobs' adviser quits amid controversy

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama's adviser Van Jones has resigned amid controversy over past inflammatory statements, the White House said early Sunday.

Jones, an administration official specializing in environmentally friendly "green jobs" with the White House Council on Environmental Quality was linked to efforts suggesting a government role in the 2001 terror attacks and to derogatory comments about Republicans.

The resignation comes as Obama is working to regain his footing in the contentious health care debate.

Jones issued an apology on Thursday for his past statements. When asked the next day whether Obama still had confidence in him, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said only that Jones "continues to work in the administration."

The matter surfaced after news reports of a derogatory comment Jones made in the past about Republicans, and separately, of Jones' name appearing on a petition connected to the events surrounding the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. That 2004 petition had asked for congressional hearings and other investigations into whether high-level government officials had allowed the attacks to occur.

"On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me," Jones said in his resignation statement. "They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide."

Jones said he has been "inundated with calls from across the political spectrum urging me to stay and fight."

But he said he cannot in good conscience ask his colleagues to spend time and energy defending or explaining his past.

Jones flatly said in an earlier statement that he did not agree with the petition's stand on the 9/11 attacks and that "it certainly does not reflect my views, now or ever."

As for his other comments he made before joining Obama's team, Jones said, "If I have offended anyone with statements I made in the past, I apologize."

Despite his apologies, Republicans demanded Jones quit.

Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana said in a statement, "His extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this administration or the public debate." Missouri Sen. Christopher Bonds said Congress should investigate Jones's fitness the job.

Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck repeatedly denounced Jones after a group the adviser co-founded, ColorofChange.org, led an advertising boycott against Beck's show to protest his claim that Obama is a racist.

James Rucker, the organization's executive director, has said Jones had nothing to do with ColorofChange.org now and didn't even know about the campaign before it started.

Jones, well-known in the environmental movement, was a civil-rights activist in California before shifting his attention to environmental and energy issues. He is known for laying out a broad vision of a green economy.

Nancy Sutley chair of the council, said in a statement released early Sunday that she accepts Jones resignation and thanked him for his service.

"Over the last six months, he had been a strong voice for creating jobs that improve energy efficiency and utilize renewable resources," she said. "We appreciate his hard work and wish him the best moving forward."

One communist down. Several to go..... I had just finished reading up on him and the things he had been involved in, when I came back and spotted this thread.

Good! It seems OB has surrounded himself with very questionable and radical people. I smell an uncurrent of evil trying its best to rip away at Americas freedoms and form a whole new type of country.

And I'm in the process of looking up more info on the fact that OB is wanting to gain total control of the internet as well.....

Chances are, he'll probably just go back to the Apollo Alliance and continue to work with the White House, out of the lime light.

Smurfy, early bird gets the worm, I was putting together this thread when you posted yours. Here is the text from Van's resignation letter.

I am resigning my post at the Council on Environmental Quality, effective today.

On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me. They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide.

I have been inundated with calls - from across the political spectrum - urging me to "stay and fight."

But I came here to fight for others, not for myself. I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future.

It has been a great honor to serve my country and my President in this capacity. I thank everyone who has offered support and encouragement. I am proud to have been able to make a contribution to the clean energy future. I will continue to do so, in the months and years ahead."

We can pobably count on one hand how many calls he has received!

Unfortunately, that's exactly what I figured. He'll rotate himself back there or into some other gov't position.... You can bet he will still be a major contributor to keeping OB on that track.....:(

Regardless if they're directly in the government or not, the same people are directly infuencing goverment policy.

Apollo Weekly Update, 1/30/09: Obama’s Clean Energy Start, Commendations From Pelosi, Stimulus Passes House

On Wednesday this week, as the House neared passage of the economic stimulus bill, Speaker Nancy Pelosi took the floor to commend the bill’s clean energy, good jobs vision and specifically noted the Apollo Alliance’s assistance and support.

“The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act makes an historic, job-creating investment in clean, efficient, American energy,” said Speaker Pelosi (see pix left). “To put people back to work and reduce our dependence on foreign oil, we set the goal of doubling our renewable energy production and renovating public buildings to make them more energy efficient. That is why the Apollo Alliance coalition of many, many groups committed to energy independence for our country and reducing climate change has said this package is ‘big, bold and will serve as a down payment on long-neglected investments in a clean energy, good jobs, made-in-America economy.’”

New guy under the radar to consider:

"Apollo Alliance Board Chair Phil Angelides was appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to serve as the Chair of the newly created Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission. Congratulations to Phil! We know he has the experience, knowledge, and energy to lead this critical non-partisan effort to ascertain the facts about what led to our nation’s current financial crisis."

From the link....

The White House appointment culminates an exceptional 18 months for Jones, who was celebrated at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York in September 2007 as one of the new and important leaders in American environmentalism. The following month New York Times columnist Tom Friedman called Jones “a rare bird” and described him as “a black social activist in Oakland, Calif., and as green an environmentalist as they come. He really gets passionate, and funny, when he talks about what it’s like to be black and green.”

Imagine that...a Presidential appointment of someone who is actually qualified for the position...

Now that's something we haven't seen in almost a decade.

There are a lot of others also qualified, who might not be so extreme in their views.

His background was in organizing radical groups like RAW and STORM. An "organizer" like Obama. He changed his strategy after STORM. He talked of being more subliminal and giving the appearance of operating in a more mainstream fashion, to greater effect long-term change from within. With the intention of uniting labor unions, environmental groups and community organizations. So we end up with the Apollo Alliance - a project of The Tides Center - the Bill Ayers, Barack Obama, Van Jones connection.

Uniting all the left-wing community organizations (including ACORN - founded by a former founder of the Weather Underground, labor unions (including SEIU - founded by a former founder of the Weather Underground), left-leaning environmental groups and corporations with a financial stake in their endeavors. A group that has played a major role in writing the recent bills that have created such an uproar.

They are news commentators who discuss policy, politics, politicians and current events, while giving us their take on these subjects according to their own personal political leanings.

What's really sad and disturbing is when so-called journalist who we depend on for unbiased facts do the same thing and pass it off as journalism.

Political correctneess and political bias has corrupted American journalism...We can lo longer believe what the news is telling us.

They have an agenda and it does not include keeping the people informed...If you really desire change here is what you should do.

Whatever way the mainstream media is leading you, do the opposite...And it is always so very obvious which way they are leading you.

I believe he was,
But admit it you have no gathered data to that effect.

Again you are operating on faith rather than clinical data.

He was talking about mass sniper/aggressor shootings.

Drive-by gang shootings are another alternative problem, which might be associateable with mostly minority gang members.

We have to look at things for what they are & are not,
& attempt to credibly try to discern why,
& if they are problems, what we might sensibly do to alleviate them in a constructive manner.
