After watching polling on various issues and candidates over the past few years, seems to me it's roughly like this:
18-22% of the US population are hardcore wingnut. These are the birthers, deathers, teabaggers, Dittoheads, Clusterfox victims, Freepers, Palinistas, 912'ers.....the 'great unwashed'. Either something has gone horribly wrong with their genetics or our water supply isn't what we think it is.
5-8% are borderline hardcore, but draw the line with the birthers and deathers. They still hate anything remotely related to liberalism, even if they have no idea what the word means.
So I estimate even on a good day, they comprise no more than 30% of the population.
The only thing I can take away from the data is it only takes about a third of the electorate to totally trash a nation. Doesn't look good.
