Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says replacing the federal income tax with a 23 percent national sales tax would make April 15th "just another beautiful spring day." April 15th is the deadline to file income taxes.

While I don't entirely agree with the National Sales tax idea. I still appreciate the fact that Huckabee is talking about issues and putting forward some ideas. I'd like to see more Candidates discussing our failed Tax system and how they plan on reforming it and streamlining it.

I'm not opposed to a Sales tax or a Flat Tax. At this point our system of taxation is a bloated mess and I'd really like to see someone take a step in the right direction with it.
Right now the system is broken, it needs to be fixed, and this issue should be important to everyone, but I doubt it'll get much attention.
Let's keep in mind that Huckabee is one of the 30% of Republican Presidential candidates that does NOT believe in Darwinism. So basically he's nuts and not fit to lead anything where technology could be important. Learn the history of the Middle East. He would destroy this country once and for all.
In theory a flat tax makes great sense but none of us here have the resources or knowledge to truly work out the numbers. So it could just be another BS story like "Tax Cuts will pay for themselves". This is a much better idea then pulling the tax write off for home buyers (which would create even more foreclosures then currently predicted). I'm still not sure this would actually work.
How many of our wealthy would simply start spending money on foreign goods?
Since this is entire industry of tax law, how many people would be out of work and how loop holes would be put in place to buy this legislation?
There is some thought that US goods would become cheaper over seas but we've allowed China to devalue their currency too long so it won't matter.
These are just some of my concerns. I think it's just talking points to get people to bring up his name and it's working.

Huckabee never stood a chance of winning the nomination or even getting a VP nod. Is it talking points, maybe, but the issue of tax reform should be important to Americans. If a minor candidate like Huckabee keeps drumming on one topic, much like Forbes did awhile back, perhaps some of the other candidates will realize that this is an important issue that people are interested in and put forward their own plans.
It's too easy for most politicians to give pat answers to problems. Who doesn't want to improve education? Who doesn't want to improve the economy? Who doesn't want America to prosper?
The devil is in the details. Politicians need to start giving details and people should demand it. Huckabee gave an idea, I don't entirely agree with it, but still it's floating an idea. If it gets people talking, bully for him.

The national sales tax is a ruse for the really rich not to pay higher taxes, and having the hourerly worker carry the load...as they need to buy daily and thier numbers are 70% or more of the whole.
Every federal and state funding for citizens would require revamping up to continue to meet the same grade of assistence paid before the new taxing...it would cripple both while attempting to recreate a new balance.
It is a nightmare system for all but the rich, who could once again become the the robber-barrons of yesteryear with this plan. It wouldn't matter how much money you made...only on the money you've spent on goods...all the off shore banking schemes could be layed to rest...all that money could come home... Oh...happy days are here again:)

This would be good for America. The poor and middle class need to pay more taxes to help keep the politicians in check.
The best tax system would be similar to today's with two major exceptions.
1. The list of loop holes would be a 1 pager. The government would cap the write offs at say 100.
2. The families earning $60k a year would pay more then the families making $20k but less then those making $200k

We need to shift the majority of the liability to the highest number of tax payers, using whatever demographics or numbers you want to use.
It's an absolute joke the politicians can spend, spend, spend with little to no checks and balances from the people. When most of the bill is being footed by 5% or less of the people, it's easy for politicians to spend recklessly. Shift the liability and it will keep spending and politicians in check.
