She is just sensitive that way Mint.

What happens if you ignore a bully?

What happens if a nation is not prepared for an aggressive invader?

What happens if you are passive in the face of aggression?

I can't play chess anymore.
Maybe cause I got Ca. Budz, and always wind up getting buzzed and psyched to play a game.

I played stoned last night - and it was pitiful.
Advanced players tore me apart - i usually hold my own at least.

Damned blitz chess - i need some real time games, migft actually go to a club for some live games.

Blitz chess is the best. Life is short.

You are just challenging yourself Cos.

You are a brilliant chess player.

So like a rock star who has played his main hit 1,000 times, you need a challenge to keep it interesting.

That is also one interesting component of marriage.

Its a hit. But you have to play it all the time.

I respectfully disagree.

You should have been there for the Unmoderated Section.

Eric was STRICTLY hands off. His view was fight it out but don't include him.

The new paradigm will be that way.

He created the other section because he knew he overplayed his hand and ran off too many people.

Again, you don't have to deal with Eric at all.

During all of my posting there, he and I have had minimal contact.

And that is because he knows he would ban me and I know I would get banned by him.

Just like you. So we know to stay away from each other.

Why can't you do that?

Let us analyze Mint's signature.

"I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine." -Ayn Rand

First it isn't very romantic.

A couple, particularly a married couple, should completely surrender themselves to each other.

Selflessly.

Yet you are not living your life FOR the other person, but WITH the other person.

Within that context though, one DOES live for the sake of the other person.

It is the giving between the two that is the merger into one unit.

Being one.

Ayn Rand was strange anyway. Really strange and selfish.

I saw a C-SPAN discussion about her by two professors.

And that quote captures her perfectly.

As the resident Ayn Rand aficionado...I wouldn't quite agree with this.

She never professed selfishness, rather...egotism. Two different things.

She did say selflessness is a bad thing. She didn't recognize altruism as a good thing.

Her theory was that if everyone acted solely to benefit themselves, they would do the best possible job. She fantasized about a society of uber competent individuals, who all worked toward a common goal....that of eradicating incompetence.

That doesn't necessarily mean she supported an 'every man for himself' attitude, as seen by her fictional secret society in Atlas Shrugged.

The vast majority of the righties who hold her up as a hero, don't have a clue as to what she actually attempted to say.

Best to view her as an amazing author, with an unmatched vocabulary. Her stories certainly had their faults...but fiction is fiction.

I never viewed her as a savior....just my favorite author.

That's common sense. No one with a functioning brain will work their ass off to benefit someone else.
Not necessarily true.

We've seen planned obsolescence in many products over the years.

One who takes pride in his/her life's work, would choose to do the best job that is humanly possible, or build the best product possible. This benefits everyone.

It benefits everyone, when we all strive to reach our fullest potential.

When Ayn Rand wrote the bulk of her work, there were no social programs like we have today. Her biggest gripe was against a concept....altruism.

She saw no sense in 'giving'...as in the church....with the hope of salvation in return. She preferred to focus on the individual. If everyone adopted her theory, we wouldn't need to 'give of oneself' to those in supposed need.

Everyone would have a strong work ethic, and this concept of 'striving for oneself' would effect every aspect of their life...including the creation of a family that one could afford to support.

By today's standards, it's a tough concept to grasp.

She never professed selfishness, rather...egotism. Two different things.

Isn't that a distinction without a difference?

Rand was a selfish egotist. How's that? Such always leads to an eccentric.

Just add drugs and you have a bonafide nut.

A smart nut. But a nut nontheless.

She did say selflessness is a bad thing. She didn't recognize altruism as a good thing.

Clearly she rejected Christianity in favor of worshipping her own ideas.

For me she is a standard self worshipper and worshipper in the perfectability of man.

She is actually quite scary. Thank God she never achieved any real political power.

She actually reminds me of Hitler.

Her theory was that if everyone acted solely to benefit themselves, they would do the best possible job. She fantasized about a society of uber competent individuals, who all worked toward a common goal....that of eradicating incompetence.

Damn this sounds very Nazi to me.

I bet she would also favor genetic engineering of humans to come up with the 'best' human.

And I would also be willing to bet that such human in her view would be blond haired and blue eyed.

You know, sometimes great intelligence can be a very dangerous thing.

And this is why emphathy is so important. Even sympathy. She respects neither.

Moreover, any consideration of either would only be in the context of what she considers to be virtue.

Unfortunately, she does not see empathy and sympathy as virtues.

What manner of cold love did she practice?

That doesn't necessarily mean she supported an 'every man for himself' attitude, as seen by her fictional secret society in Atlas Shrugged.

But she clearly DID support every man for himself.

In fact that is the core of her philosophy.

Clearly she probably favored masturbation over making love with another person.

The vast majority of the righties who hold her up as a hero, don't have a clue as to what she actually attempted to say.

Well as a conservative, I like her private market views and excellence is a requirement for success for the righteous business person.

Yet the religious conservative would reject her worship of man's mind.

Objectivity and rational self interest stop at Jesus' door.

For instance, on its face there is nothing objective or rational to the purely scientific mind about the Second Coming of Jesus and his resurrection of all Earth's dead.

Rand would love my belief in pure market based capitalism.

But she would hate my religious belief.

Best to view her as an amazing author, with an unmatched vocabulary. Her stories certainly had their faults...but fiction is fiction.

Agreed. The shifty eyed, gapped toothed cigarette smoker would probably be a good to party with and debate.

I never viewed her as a savior....just my favorite author.

Good conclusion.

She did use the word "selfishness" regularly in her non-fiction, even titling one of her essays on ethics, "The Virtue of Selfishness" (http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/phl201/modules/texts/text%201/rand.html). I think she used the word precisely because it was provocative and challenging to the prevailing altruistic world view.

She did, however, stress the point that she used the word differently from the common understanding. Most people think of selfishness as simple greed or instantaneous gratification. She put forward a ethical system based on forward-thinking, rational selfishness. Rationality was the key, because rationality was just as important to Rand's philosophy as the rejection of altruism.

Like many libertarians, I've dabbled in Objectivism. I think I even called myself an Objectivist for about two minutes. Some of the more fanatical Randians put me off, though.

He will never get it Mint.

Because he does not want to get it.

For him it is too much to ask to not use that term in any manner to me.

To reject the use of the 'n-word' instead as a respectful way to recognize the trespasses of the past by one's ancestors.

So it is an attitude in addition to the willingness to use.

And it is then combined with an insistence that I respect HIS parameters of what represents 'respect.'

And I am inclined to meet blind aggression WITH blind aggression.

Consistently and insistently.

There are no rules in war. But I will never fire the first shot.

It benefits everyone, when we all strive to reach our fullest potential.

Unfortunately not all are motivated and 'smart.'

Some are weak, lazy and dumb.

What would Rand do with these people if she had power?

When Ayn Rand wrote the bulk of her work, there were no social programs like we have today. Her biggest gripe was against a concept....altruism.

She saw no sense in 'giving'...as in the church....with the hope of salvation in return. She preferred to focus on the individual. If everyone adopted her theory, we wouldn't need to 'give of oneself' to those in supposed need.

I think the suburbs are Rand's idea of perfection. Isolated boxes of self interest with virtually no altruism per community.

I hate the suburbs.

I love the village life of New York. Give me the subway over a limo any day.

Everyone would have a strong work ethic, and this concept of 'striving for oneself' would effect every aspect of their life...including the creation of a family that one could afford to support.

But everybody does not have a strong work ethic.

Some people hate paper work.

Rand was an intellectual snob. She would be hated by common folk.

Just as I am sure she hated common folk.

I agree with Rand's concept of being the best you can be.

But her rejection of altruism is her fatal flaw.

By today's standards, it's a tough concept to grasp.

Well Big Government is NOT altruist or objective in the final analysis.

It is just stupid.

My complaint is when they start establishing their own morality based on their own objectivism.

The human mind is too fickle to trust with the establishment of a man-created morality.

In my humble and altruist opinion, secular progressivism leads to chaos the ultimate undoing of a civilization.

Good point...I've read all her stuff....T.V.O.S included. And yes...she certainly did use the word to her own liking.

I think it's important to keep her works in the proper place in society. She wrote fantasies, that allowed her to put forth her (valid, IMO) theories.

However, I don't believe there is anyone here that would grant Howard Roark the right to blow up the building he designed, solely because he didn't agree with the implementation of same. Say nothing of believing that he'd be acquitted in a court of law!

Some of her social commentary from the 40's and 50's, especially w/respect to the incompetence of the govt., came to a rather spooky fruition under Bushco.

There are some sound theories in Libertarianism, as there are in Socialism, and Democracy as well. For some reason, none of these systems function to full capacity.

What you often find with the fanatical Randians, is that they aren't familiar with her work. They pluck soundbites from various 'bandwagon' Neo Libertarian sites.

Again...she's an author....dammit. I found her private meetings to be somewhat contrary to her theory of individualism.

My experience with radical Randians is that when you ask them what think about a particular issue, they will reply, "Ayn Rand said..." They don't give their own thoughts; they simply regurgitate hers. And if you dare disagree with any item of Objectivist philosophy, they will tell you go read her books. If you tell them you already have, then they will usually respond that you must have been too stupid to understand them, because no one could possibly have any informed disagreements with Saint Ayn.

That's when they have crossed the line between philosophy and religion.

To reject the use of the 'n-word' instead as a respectful way to recognize the trespasses of the past by one's ancestors.

So it is an attitude in addition to the willingness to use.

As well, it was a virtual requirement that her followers smoke too. Of course, the facts were still being hidden about cancer back then.

She should not have needed external confirmation to rationally conclude that sucking weed smoke down into one's lungs is unhealthy.

Even before it was ruled as such, most people more than suspected that smoking was not healthy.

It probably ultimately led to her untimely demise.

Interesting as well, she rejected the modern Libertarian movement.

Probably because at the end of the day, any political philosophy runs into disagreement about the definition of what liberty happens to be over some particular issue that is important to two different people for two different reasons.

In a vote among 3 individuals of the Randian persuasion, one will probably be unhappy when outvoted.

It's easy to understand the basic premise of 'self' over 'the whole', when discussing Rand.

Yet one cannot separate the self from the whole and have an organized society.

There is a self and a whole and to the maximum extent practicable, the two should hopefully coexist peacefully.

Note how much trouble humans have always had with this simply fact.

She immigrated from Russia, and loved the ability to express oneself in this country.

Like many who move from the country to the city. Lots of energy compared to those already there.

I am not familiar with Browner

Bill Clinton EPA Administrator.

It's a catch 22 situation..Damned if you do, and damned if you dont..I think they should have devised other methods of incentives for the people, other than cash for clunkers

Right. But ultimately the market will adjust to meet the needs of the people.

I mean you can go to the Moon, but then what?

True that, and that is the problem with both parties..That take precedence over everything

Bottom line is that the government cannot and should not become as large an employer as the private sector.

And that is the direction we are heading. That is tyranny. Slowly applied.

Because teabaggers are gay?
Perhaps some, but certainly not all.

The first time I heard the term 'teabags' used to refer to the scrotum, was when I condescended to watch "Sex and The City" with my GF.

One of the main characters was freeking because her new boyfriend always hung out on her new couch in the nude.

They were talking about his teabags, and I was hysterical. As an added bonus, the guy always left his real teabags laying around the house, so it made for good comedy.

A 'teabagger' is anybody that puts his balls in someone else's face.

If you ain't gettin teabagged once in a while, then you ain't treatin your man right!

So would that be better or a disaster??

A disaster in my opinion.

God designed it to work the way it works.

The plants need that winter hibernation break.

The snow purifies.

My guess is that plant life could stress out and die or overrun the earth.

weed is where it started, then to crack, back to weed, back to crack. Hopefully he is done, if not, we are.
Crack/coke is a reason to sever all ties.

This has less to do with weed, and everything to do with the type of individual that he is. He either inherited these traits from his father, your wife, or both. As well, if she was a coddler all of his life, he never learned about consequences. You'll never get a mother to abandon a child...even if it would be for the best.

There are plenty of beer drinkers who fuck up their lives. Moderation is the key, no matter what your drug of choice.

However....coke/opiates/speed are all dead ends.

So the damn thing is running like every 20 minues - we just have single pane windows.

Costing a fortune, and my skin is all dry, hands stay cold, it's horrible.
Yep....welcome to my life. We in the cold climates are always scurrying around, preparing for the next season. We gather firewood all summer, to save thousands on heating oil in the winter.

There's constant work to be done in the gardens, to prepare for the next season.

And yes...the dry skin in winter is a bitch!!! But...your Tai Chi buddy will tell you...it strengthens your chi.

That which doesen't kill me, makes me stronger.

That's why it's tough for you warm climate types to understand global warming. You don't see how it works.

For the last few decades, the winters are getting warmer. We used to get 3 ft. of ice on the lakes...now, 2 ft. is a rarity.

As well, there is an uncontrolled explosion of fleas/ticks in the areas just south of me. This, because there aren't harsh winters the way there used to be. Add to that the fact that many species of birds that never wintered over in the north, are perfectly comfortable up here now.

Not much changes between seasons in the warmer climates. You don't see these small, but significant issues that mark the end of climate as we know it.

It was difficult to determine the CO2 produced by a cord of wood since a cord is sold by volume, not weight.

Based on a lot of sources, I assumed an average cord weighs 3,500lbs.

This is the equivalent to 1.75 short tons.

Based on EIA data, burning one short ton of wood emits 3,812lbs of CO2.

This would be 6,671lbs of CO2 per cord or 3.02 metric tons.

Bill Cosby's signature:

War should be a last option not an industry.

Yet America's military industrial complex is probably the single biggest industry in the world and in the history of mankind.

So saying it should not be an industry is futile at best. Naive at worst.

Thus, an industry needs at least one war to generate more profits.

I mean, the American military industrial complex will still buid shit.

But a good shooting war requests more goods and services.

I read somewhere where it costs $1 million a year to support one soldier.

We have 50,000 or more in Afghanistan. Do the math.
