Banning isn't the solution, it's the problem

I've been visiting this website for three years, and for
the first couple of years, the moderators rarely banned
anyone except spammers. The website seemed to run
smoothly without the mods resorting to banning.

Recently there seems to have been a spate of bannings,
and I think it has done more harm than good. The mods
do a better job when they keep a loose grip on the reins.

I think the mods should relax, take a little vacation for
a few weeks. Let the drama die down. Let things get
back to normal. (Although the drama has been fun.)

The rules for banning should be very simple:

No spammers (who post ads on a bunch of threads)

No death threats or invitations to meet in real life
"so I can beat the shit outta you!"

No crude insults involving "yo mama" or other family
members.

No obvious trolls (newcomers who immediately start
stirring up shit on a bunch of threads just to piss
people off.)

No excessive or constant profanity and insults.
(it's okay to hurl a few zingers in the heat of debate,
but don't do it all the time and don't be too crude
about it.)

Flaming other members is okay (as long as it's
not done to excess) but make an effort to be
creative and witty, not crude and stupid.

The moderators shouldn't worry too much about
what is racist or homophobic or offensive to one
group or another. If a member says something
offensive, he'll be called on it by other members.

This isn't a gardening and horticulture website.
It's political opponents debating hot issues.
Tempers can flare. Heated words can fly.
Oh well... don't take it personally.

It's only the internet.

Agreed...I have been noticing something missing from this board lately and thats good heated debate. I liked arguing and debating the issues with guys like SeniorChief and LL7 but lately this place seems to be dying and the debate is gone. I don't know if it is the liberals, my self included have gotten a little too cocky and arogant or the cons just want someone to always agree with them or both but some good topics have been posted to little or no response and if someone such as myself disagrees with topics a little too often we seem to get ignored and the name calling has risen, I agree in heated debate it is ok because you are passionate about what you believe but the debate isnt happening and its still open season for petty name calling.
